How much does it cost to transfer a car title?

What is a dealer doc fee?
A documentation ('doc') fee is what a dealer charges to process paperwork — title, registration, and DMV filing. It varies widely, from around $85 (California, capped by law) to $999 (Florida, uncapped). Doc fees are often negotiable on private-party math but fixed at franchise dealers. Is the title fee the same as sales tax?

Do I pay a title fee on an auction car from Copart or IAAI?
Yes. The auction charges its own title/documentation processing fee (around $20) at the sale, and then you pay your home state's title transfer fee again when you register the vehicle. Both are small relative to auction buyer fees and sales tax, but they add up — factor them into your max bid.
