On Copart, Pure Sale means no reserve (the highest bidder wins), Minimum Bid means the seller set a reserve and gets a say after the auction, and Buy It Now means you can take a set price before the live auction. Those definitions come from Copart's own member guide, which we found in its Canadian edition, so confirm the status on your US lot page. Whichever status you see, work out your ceiling with the max bid calculator and the all-in cost with the Copart fee calculator.

The number missing from this calculator
A fee calculator tells you what the car will cost. It does not tell you whether it will sell. CarFlipIQ tracks retail asking prices and days-on-market across all 50 states — so you know whether a winning bid actually moves at your target resale price in your local market.
Estimates only. Copart updates its fee schedule periodically and certain locations / vehicle types apply surcharges. Always verify final fees against the Copart member fee schedule before bidding.
Calculator assumptions: Standard (non-Premier) buyer bidding online, default $95 gate, $15 environmental and $20 title fees, no storage. Estimates only. Also available as the standalone Copart fee calculator.

What does Pure Sale mean on Copart?
Copart's New Member Guide (copart.ca, revised 05/20, checked October 2026) defines it as "no minimum bid or reserve price," with the lot awarded to the highest bidder at the close of bidding.
For your bid: the top bid wins at any price. There is no hidden seller number to clear, so your own ceiling is the only limit. That also means the price can land low or high; do not assume either.
What does Minimum Bid mean on Copart?
The same guide lists this as a reserve price: the seller has placed a reserve, or minimum, on the lot. If the minimum is not passed during the online auction, the seller has a limited window after the sale to accept the high bid. The guide also describes counter bids: when a lot has a Minimum Bid requirement or is On Approval, the seller may send you a counter bid after the auction, and you can accept, decline or respond with your own.
For your bid: being the high bidder may not end the matter. Do not line up transport or resale until the sale is confirmed. If you want a reserve lot, bid your true ceiling, not a number you hope the seller accepts. The guide's deadline is written for Copart Canada, so read the timing on your own lot.
What does On Approval mean?
The guide says the seller reserved the right to approve the final high bid, and that the high bidder is obligated to purchase if the seller releases the vehicle within the approval period. Treat it like Minimum Bid with a firmer duty on your side: if the seller says yes, you are in.
What does Buy It Now mean?
Per the guide, you can buy a vehicle immediately for the price listed by the seller. It is only available on select vehicles, and you can use it from when a lot is listed until the live auction begins. Copart's latest annual report (10-K filed 2026-09-29) describes it as buying pre-qualified vehicles at a set price.
For your bid: there is no bid. The decision is whether the set price plus fees fits your numbers. We explain what we could and could not verify about fees in Copart Buy It Now fees.
Which status is best for a flipper?
None is best in general. Each changes what you can control:
| Status | Who decides the price | What you control | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Sale | The bidders | Your ceiling | None beyond overbidding |
| Minimum Bid | Bidders, then the seller | Your ceiling, your patience | Win the auction, still not get the car |
| On Approval | Bidders, then the seller | Your ceiling | Held to the purchase if released |
| Buy It Now | The seller | Take it or leave it | Paying a premium for certainty |
How do fees change with the status?
The fees follow the price you pay, not the label. The one open question is whether every fee applies to Buy It Now, which we could not confirm. Model it as the full stack to be safe. Our worked tables are in how much are Copart fees in 2026, and the after-the-win items are in Copart fees after the winning bid.
What should you do before bidding on any status?
- Read the sale status on the lot page, not just the photos.
- Set the ceiling first. How much should you bid on a Copart car walks through it.
- Make sure your bid limit covers it; see Copart bid limit and buying power.
- Check pickup deadlines in Copart storage fees and pickup.
The status tells you who has the last word on price. Your ceiling tells you when to stop.
